Fishing

The Anglesey coastline is littered with shipwrecks with a reputation for harbouring all kinds of sea creatures. You can find tope up to 80 pounds in weight, big tub gurnard, specimen pollack, bull huss, cod and conger eel. Not forgetting the sea bass.

But fishing them is a real test of local knowledge and seamanship. If there are fish out there, the experienced skippers of Starida Sea Services will find them. Indeed, Stan Zalot of Starida was once voted, “Skipper of the Month” by Sea Angler magazine.

These days Stan himself sticks mainly to pleasure cruises to nearby Puffin Island with its seabirds and seals, sometimes with a little mackerel fishing thrown in. It’s perfect for beginners of all ages to catch enough for a barbecue.

Sometimes Stan has to pinch himself when he gets up in the morning and looks across the Menai Strait to the mountains of Snowdonia. “It’s the most beautiful spot,” he says. Not a bad way to earn a living,

“I know every rock and stone on Puffin Island but on every trip you see something different. It’s flipping brilliant, it is”.

“Visitors get something totally different from what they’re used to, the thrill of seeing the animals and birds in their natural habitat and then the excitement of catching the fish. The kids’ eyes light up in wonderment.”

Steve Noble, from Stocksbridge near Sheffield, and his friends are dedicated sea anglers - and they know Anglesey is as good as it gets.

“A good skipper makes it a great day out,” says Steve. “He’s got to take so many things into consideration – the height of the tide, the wind factor; he’s got to know how to position the boat so that you get a good sweep across the wreck, and if he’s out by as little as 10 metres, you could be fishing smooth ground where there are no fish.”

Fishing out of our other ports such as Amlwch, Menai Bridge, Holyhead and Cemaes is equally wonderful. In fact, you’ll find good spots all around our 125 miles of coastline. Our lakes and rivers offer brown and sea trout, and in our coarse fisheries lurk plenty of big carp – and even the occasional 30-pound catfish.
